Influence of HF heating on transmission of electromagnetic wave

Besides distinct variations of plasma parameters in the heated region, ground-based high-power high frequency ionospheric heating can also give rise to a variety of spatial effects that affect the properties of electromagnetic waves propagating in the region. A physical model, based on Ohm heating mechanism, has been built up to study the influence of the HF incident waves to wave propagation, in particular the role of HF-induce ionospheric heating in the wave phase shifts, which is then evaluated quantitatively through numerical modeling. Compared with a number of the observations of EISCAT-TROMSO ionospheric modification experiments, the computational results obtained in this paper show that the phase excursion and Doppler shift variations of diagnostic waves can be related to both the parameters and results of ionospheric modification
