STUDY ON DECOLORING METHODS AND REFINED OF TALL OIL

Tall oil is one of the by-products of kraft pulping of pine wood. It consists mainly of resin acid, fatty acid and neutral components. Both the raw and the simply distilled tall oils have the characteristics of deep color, offensive odor, high neutral and low fatty contents. Sometimes it also contains impurity. All those faults greatly limit its applications. This paper investigates some decoloring methods of tall oil. The simply distilled tall oil of the Jamusi paper mill being the research material, several decoloring methods such as absorbtion, extraction, soapfing and acidic action have been tested. The results show that the decoloring process of phosphoric acid action is simpler and more effective than the others. By the process, refined tall oil with the characteristics of lighter color, higher yield(about75%), better stability and being able to keep the pale-color protracted. Moreover, the residue and the first fraction of the disitilling process can be used as softening reagents of rubber.
