The Attraction of Yunnan Pine to Pine Shoot Beetle and Tree Volatile Compositions

Volatile compositions of the phloem of healthy and previous attacked Yunnan pine ( Pinus yunnanensis ) were analyzed using GC-MS, and the attractions of these two type trees to Tomicus piniperda were identified by the ways of trap logs. The experimental results indicated that the attraction of logs from previous attacked trees is obviously higher than those from healthy trees, at the same time, the content of the main volatile components of them is also clearly different. The content of a-pinene, camphere, β-thujene, β- ocimene was somewhat higher, whereas the content of β-pinene, β-phellandrene and myrcene was somewhat lower in the phloem of attacked Yunnan pine than that in healthy Yunnan pine. The difference in volatile components between healthy and previous attacked pines is one of the important reasons which lead to their different attractivity to pine shoot beetle.
