Geographic Variations in Wood Properties of Bambusa chungii for Pulpwood

An experiment was conducted to study the genetic variations of wood properties of Bambusa chungii for pulpwood from eight provenances.Results indicate that fiber length,cellulose,pentosan and content of 1% NaOH extraction have significant differences among eight provenances.The absolute variations of lignin content and fiber length for different provenances are low,which suggests that the two traits are unnecessary to be included in the selection program.Superior clump with lower benzo-alcohol extractive and ash contents can be selected due to the large differences among all clumps tested in this study.Heritabilities of cellulose,pentosan content and fiber length are the strongest,while that of 1% NaOH extraction content is medium,and those of lignin,ash content and fiber width are the weakest.There are no significant correlations between wood fiber dimensions and chemical components.There is a positive correlation between pentosan and 1% NaOH extraction at the 0.1 level and a negative correlation between fiber width and length at the 0.1 level.Fiber length-width ratio shows a significantly positive correlation with fiber length and a significantly negative correlation with fiber width.Fiber length and fiber length-width ratio exhibit a decrease tendency from south to north(high altitude to low altitude) and ash content displays an increase tendency with increasing longitude.According to the comparison of some chemical components,Guangdong Huaiji,Guangxi Nanning and Guilin are superior provenances with optimum wood properties for pulpwood.
