Responses of Litterfall in Triploid Populus tomentosa Plantations to Forest Age

Seasonal dynamic changes of litterfall in triploid Populus tomentosa pulp plantations of four different ages were studied from April 2008 to March 2009. Results showed that the total amount of literfall per square meter per year increased with forest age,ranging from (216.03±59.73) gram in three-year-old forest to (482.38±101.34) gram in seven-year-old forest. The dynamic change of litterfall in different months exhibited a unimodal curve,and the maximum value was observed in October. Total amounts of N,P and energy returned to the forest floor via litterfall also increased with age. The total amount of N returned to forest floor per square meter per year ranged from 1.84 to 2.89 gram,that of P from 0.58 to 1.17 gram,and the energy from 3.96 to 8.89MJ.
