Continuous Fermentative Hydrogen Production from Molasses with Biohydrogenbacterium R3 sp.nov. in Continuous Stirred-Tank Reactor

An experiment was conducted to study the performance of hydrogen production with Biohydrogenbacterium R3 sp.nov.isolated from activated sludge from molasses.The reactor was operated at a temperature of 36 degrees C with a hydraulic residence time of 6h in continuous flow mode.Experimental data showed the feasibility of continuous hydrogen production with Chemical Oxygen Demand(COD) ranging from 2600 to 4440mg/L,and the maximum biogas and hydrogen yield of 6.08L and 3L were obtained,respectively.The performance of hydrogen production was obviously affected by influent substrate concentration.The variation of influent pH value had an impact on the efficiency of COD removal but no influence on effluent pH value,which indicated that the continuous stirred-tank reactor with R3 was a relative hydrogen-producing system.The oxidation-reduction potential stabilized at-445~-420mV.
