On the international Ordovician and Silurian boundary

Mu En-zhi and Rong Jia-yu
A review of the recent state of the Ordovician-Silurian boundary research indicates that the Boundary Working Group (OSBWG) has done much in this important work. The matter of principle in regard to the specific of the boundary is discussed and a viewpoint in which a leading fossil group for determining the boundary should be the graptolite is restated. Relative merits of two potential boundary stratotypes (Dob's Linn and Anticosti) are evaluated. It seems that no section which meets all requirements for an Ordovician-Silurian boundary stratotype has been known as yet. It is not appropriate to take a formal postal vote until we can be certain that all divergent views are fully understood by all the OSBWG members and the matter of principles has been adequately explored, because conditions are not ripe for settlement of the issue.
