STRUCTURES OF EARLY METAMORPHIC STRATA IN THE KHONDALITE SERIES IN THE DAQINGSHAN—WULASHAN AREA, INNER MONGOLIA: RESULTS OF THE SUB-HORIZONTAL BEDDING-PARALLEL DETACHMENT DEFORMATION IN THE LOWER CRUST

As a characteristic metamorphic sedimentary association in Archean high-grade terrain, the Khondalite series has been extensively studied in recent years. The structures, structural styles and tectonic deformation remain to be rarely discussed. The present paper has studied, in detail, the high-grade metamorphic complex containing Khondalite series in the Daqingshan—Wulashan area. The khondalite series is composed, from bottom to top, of three lithological units, namely garnet-biotite gneiss unit, diopside gneiss unit and marble unit, indicating a sedimentary cycle from fine clastic, clastic, and calcium chemical sediments, to magnesium carbonates. The sedimentary units were metamorphosed under granulite facies with clockwise P-T path of isothermal decompression, but also intensely deformed by multistages of deformation, forming subhorizontal detachment structures, dome and folds and EW steep foliation belt. The metamorphic strata are therefore exposed, at present, in irregular forms. Their outcrop pattern shows zigzag-interweaving forms and missing of some layers and contact of separated layers. The zigzag-interweaving forms are attributed to the superposition of dome-folds structures and EW steep foliation. It is clear, after removing the above superposition, that subhorizontal detachment faulting resulted in missing of some layers and contact of separated layers, indicated by the early structural styles of the metamorphic strata, i.e. accumulation of podiform strata with WE long axes. This is the characteristic structural pattern in high-grade terrain.
