Discovery of the Permian System in the Daling Area of Hainan Island and Its Significance

The Late Palaeozoic Erathem of the Daling area of Hainan Island was regarded to be the Lower Carboniferous Junying Group by the 4th Branch of the Hainan Geolgical Team in 1978.The authors found first Agathiceras cf. vulgatum Ruzhancev, Altudoceras sp., in the phyllite that lies on the 3rd member of the Yangguang Stage in the Daling Farm section from the 14th team to 12th team. Altudoceras is common in the Early Permian in South China. Neogondolella? sp.ranging in age from Permian to Triassic,was found from the Hechaling section that was originally considered to be the limestone of the Bed 4 in the upper part of the Predevonian.In the 8th Team of Bangqi Farm,the sporopollen assemblage dominated by triletes was first analysed from the sericite—phyllite which was originally thought to be the Bed 2 of the Lower Carboniferous Junying Group.The main members of the assemblage have been found in the coal measures of Early Permian age in Shaodong,Shaoshan of Hunan, Changxing of Zhejiang,Pingdingshan of Henan and other places especially, Densosporites sp.which was only found in the Early Permian Qianyang coal measures in Qingfeng of Hunan.The authors think that the Permian System was the first discovery,in addition to Lower Carboniferous Yangguang Stage,in the Late Palaeozoic of the Daling area.Ammonitides,conodonts and sporopollen assemblage are all common in Permian rocks in South Chian.The Permian of the Daling area is divided into Echa,Eding and Nanlong Formations,which have a correlation with the Permian of the Western Hainan Island.The dicovery of ammonoides in the Permian rocks over the Yangguang Stage proved that the Permian in this area lies on the Yangguang Stage.
