The Issue of Interaction in Open and Distance Learning

This paper comprises a commentary on issues related to the theme of interaction in the field of open and distance learning. Definitions of interaction, types and forms of interaction, and effects of interaction are discussed on the basis of relevant literature; critical analyses are added where appropriate. Building on the discussion and the analyses, the paper argues that the complexities concerning the topic of interaction may reflect the diverse perspectives that contemporary distance educators and researchers hold in relation to their own tradition of distance education, which is further rooted in a specific socio-historical context. In conclusion, the paper presents some emerging concerns and questions that could guide future research and practice in open and distance learning with respect to the theme of interaction.
