Staff Training and Development in Open and Distance Learning

An increas ing number of educational ins titutions and org aniz ations are us ing dis tance educationand online learning and the number of cours es that are being delivered online will continue to g row. To meet this increas ing demand, educational ins titutions and org aniz ations mus t train and provide profes s ional development to s taff to function in the open and dis tance learning (ODL) environment. In-s tructors and tutors working in ODL mus t be trained on how to facilitate online learning, cater for in-dividual differences, provide feedback to s tudents, moderate s tudents ' interaction, motivate s tudents, encourag e active learning, communicate effectively, and us e the delivery technolog y. When new em-ployees are hired to work in ODL, their current level of expertis e mus t be identified and compared with the expertis e required to function on the job. If there are deficiencies, training s hould be pro-vided to prepare the new employee for the job. If the new employee has the expertis e for the job, the employee s hould be oriented to the job. As employees complete their tas ks, performance s hould be monitored to determine deficiencies. Profes s ional development s hould be implemented to provide the knowledg e and s kills to overcome thes e deficiencies. Future training and profes s ional development s ys tems mus t provide jus t-in-time training s o that employees learn as they perform, and coaching and mentoring by experts s hould be available to provide feedback and g uide employees. The train-ing s hould be automated with the us e of online s ys tems and intellig ent tutoring s ys tems. The training s ys tem could us e learning objects to allow the computer s ys tem to as s emble training materials as re-quired and us e job aids that are s pecific to tas ks.
