How Can We Help Students to Become Autonomous Learners?

Zhu Baiyu and Du Chunzi
In an open education system, teaching centers are at the frontline providing educational services to students. How these teaching centers can help the distance learners in China to become autonomous learners is both a theoretical and practical concern. This paper describes the experience of the College of Open Education at Hunan Radio and Television University in offering learning support to distance learners. The lessons we have learnt should be useful to other radio and television universities in China. First, before a model of effective student support can be constructed, a sound knowledge of the characteristics of distance learners is necessary. Such an understanding can serve as a guideline for the development of a student support model. Second, the staff at teaching centers should have a firm grasp of learning theories and learning methods so that they can provide effective guidance to students. More importantly, individualized learning should not be over-emphasized at the expense of institutionalized learning. Third, effective management by teachers is also crucial. A well-trained team of teachers is more likely to provide high-quality teaching and student support services. Lastly, a lot of work needs to be done on a systemic level. A sound learning support service system, an effective teaching management system and a quality assurance system are all key elements in the realization of effective distance education services.
