The Construction of Teaching Resources that Suit the Needs of Distance Learners: The Example of the Multi-media Learning Materials for the Course A Concise History of Education in China

This paper uses the design and application of the multi-media learning materials for the course A Concise History of Education in China as an example to illustrate how to construct teaching resources that suit the needs of distance learners. The author of this paper believes that there is a direct relationship between the quality of teaching materials and the quality of learning outcomes. In distance education, multi-media materials that can fulfill the teaching requirements and cater for students' needs are key. The design of these materials should take into consideration the specific features of a particular course, and students should also be at the center of this design process. The teaching content, presentation of knowledge and media mix ought to be decided with reference to students' characteristics and needs. Text, audio and video have to be integrated in an organic manner with the strengths of each medium fully exploited to answer the needs of distance learners. In particular, visual resources should be diverse and interesting. For example, in A Concise History of Education in China, there are a series of TV programs. Each program has a clear theme and the content is well organized, so students can view themes as the need arises. Students' autonomy is thus enhanced. Sound chips, many of them not released before, make the learning content more dynamic and interesting, while both visual and sound chips make the materials easier to understand.
