The Issue of Quality in Online Distance Education

This paper first chronicles how the reputation of distance education has been built over the past decade.On an international level, distance education faces two major challenges: its confrontation with conventional education and its innate negative attributes.Distance learning institutes in China are similarly facing a host of challenges, which the paper describes in detail: the educational and industrial sectors hold very conservative views about distance education, while the development of distance education is unreasonably led by government policies about which many distance learning institutes are uncertain about; the quality, beliefs and behavior of distance education practitioners are matters of concern; and there is a contradiction between the commercialization of education and the educational tradition of China; the information technology infrastructure in China is quite underdeveloped and quality online teaching resources are inadequate ; there is a lack of theoretical foundation and practical experience about online education; and over-expansion of distance education is likely due to strong educational demand, but the management mechanism for China's higher education is still not mature. The paper suggests that distance education institutes in China have to prepare for these challenges.
