Discussion on strategy for nurturing cognitive capability for distance learners

The government of our country has recognized distance learning as one of the important components of our nation's development strategy and takes it as the first choice in constructing learning society. More and more adults have selected the way of distance education to improve themselves. This paper summarizes the frequent difficulties that adult distance learners are encountered. It points out especially the issues of self-control and guidance of learning. Addressing to the issues, the author proposes new train of thought to improve learning of distance learners: through nurturing primary cognitive capability of the adult learners to improve learning strategies related to learning qualities, and in due course to increase distance learning outcome of adult learning eventually. Through analyzing the connotation of primary cognition concept and in light of characteristics of adult learners of our country, the author proposes five items of strategy to help adult distance learners to improve their primary cognition capability: to wake up autonomous learning consciousness, to impart knowledge of primary cognition, to help distance learners to enrich their experiences of cognition and to enhance learners' self-control and conduct assessment timely and objectively.
