Sustainable development of teacher training in rural areas:an empirical study

Modern distance education in primary and middle schools in West China rural areas, an important and widespread project to promote educational development in the country, has been exerting far-reaching significance in improving educational quality, speeding up informationization, providing vocational training and constructing lifelong learning system in these areas. As the project is to be extended to cover most rural areas in China now, the most pressing issue is how to improve its practicality and efficiency, fostering sustainable development. Teacher training plays a critical role in improving educational quality. Investigation shows that after training, most teachers have specific professional goals and are equipped with basic teaching skills. With educational reform deepened and new curriculum theories introduced, teacher training has shown new tendencies and faced new challenges. Most teachers need to face the problem of continuing education to improve instructional efficiency. There is an increasing pressure for many teachers from heavy workload and personal life. Information infrastructure is irrationally distributed. There is a growing diversity of training needs from teachers. The author also puts forward strategies for sustainable development of teacher training in rural areas, namely, to promote information awareness and ability of the principals whose schools take part in the project, to set up appropriate campus ecology, to coordinate relationship between colleagues, to reallocate software and hardware, to make full use of the existing resources, and to upgrade teacher training modes.
