The conversion of the expressional functions and an analysis of the particle de in Mandarin Chinese

Guo, Rui
There have been two conflicting views about the functions of de. The divergence of views lies in the categorization of the de-construction. A systematic analysis of similar phenomena with a more universal approach would be necessary to reach a more reasoned understanding of this question. The present study takes as its starting point the analysis of the conversion of expressional functions like predication, reference and modification. It differentiates two categorical levels:the lexical level and the syntactical level.Categories can converse on both levels. De is an adjectival marker or (from the point of view of expressional functions) a modificational marker. When a de-construction acts as a subject or an object, it undergoes a zero-marked conversion from modification to reference, thus a nominalization on the syntactical level
