Li Guang-yuan and Ren Ying-yun (Research Laboratory of Keshan Disease, Xian Medical University, Xian)  
Keshan Disease (KSD) is an endemic cardiomyopathy of unknown rausation. In early stage of 1960s, some investigators put forward the water-soil etiology of KSD. Attention to molybdenum (Mo was paid greatly in relationship with KSD. In accordance with catalytic polarography, the molybdenum contents in the staple grains, meals, hairs and urine in KSD and non-KSD areas were determined with the purpose of trying to understand the relationship between the molybdenum and KSD. The Mo contents of maizes and wheats in KSD Mo-mine area (Hua county) and affected area (Huangling county) were 0,312 ± 0.142, 1.108±0.434 and 0.226± 0.035, 0.249±0.058, and in the non-affected areas (Mei and Qia county) were 0.139±0.039, 0.193±0.020 and 0.138±0.007, 0.293±0.002ppm respectively. The hair Mo contents of children in affected areas had the similar results. These results showed that the grain, hair and urine Mo contents were the highest in KSD Mo-mine area. The children's molybdenum intakes and excretions in KSD area and non-KSD area were measured (table 1). The results indicated that the children's Mo-intakes and excretions in KSD area were all higher than the non-affected area, but the percentages of Mo negative balance (22.2%) were also more than the children's in non-KSD area.The mean MO retentions were 86μg/day in the KSD area and 76μg/day in other area. According to above experimental results, there was no moly-denum deficiency in the KSD area,but Mo-metabolism disorder could not be got rid of.Tab.1 School children's Mo intakes and excretions
