Based on the component mode functions of primary and secondary struc- tures,an improved modal analysis method is presented for the seismic response analysis of appurtenant structures taking into account the influence of transla- tion and rotation of the point of attachment.The interaction effect due to coincidence of the modal frequencies of primary and secondary systems is exa- mined.It leads to amplify the response of the secondary system,especially when the 1st or 2nd mode is perfectly in tune with the 1st mode of the primary system.In addition,other factors such as the mass ratio of the secondary to primary systems also affect the response.A simplified precedure using matrix perturbation technique is suggested.As a practical example,some appurtenant structures of dam are analyzed
