SEISMIC DAMAGE MODEL OF BRICK STRUCTURE

Jiang Jinren Sun Jingjiang (Institute of Engineering Mechanics, State Seismological Bureau)  
It is shown from a set of cyclic tests that a brick wall is damaged by a combination of repeated loading reversals and high load excursions. In view of this, seismic damage to brick structure is expressed in terms of maximum deformation and accumulated energy dissipation from repeated cyclic loadings.Based on 45 test restoring force curves of brick wall, a two-parameter seismic damage model is obtained. This model is represented in terms of a "damage index" which is a nonlinear function of maximum deformation and accumulated energy dissipation, and follows Weibull distribution. The damage index is checked and calibrated by using the results of nonlinear stochastic seismic response analysis of 37 damaged brick buildings from past earthquakes.
