A NUMERICAL METHOD FOR PROBLEMS OF SEISMIC WAVE SCATTERING

Liu Jingbo Liao Zhenpeng (Institute of Engineering Mechanics, State Seismological Bureau)  
A numerical procedure for analyzing scattering and diffraction of seismic waves caused by two dimensional lateral inhomogeneities are systematically studied by means of a mass lumped finite element method combined with the artificial transmitting boundary. The stability condition of the numerical model and efficiency of the artificial boundary for transmitting surface waves are particularly discussed. The numerical method has been applied to analyse the effects of irregular surface topography on seismic ground motion due to incident Rayleigh surface wave, body P and SV waves. Some meaningful conclusions drawn from the results have been applied to the microzonation of Dalian City. The paper has shown that the method is quite promising, for studying effects of complex local geological conditions on earthquake ground motion.
