UPPER BOUND OF SEISMIC FORCES ON PIERS OF CONTINUOUS ARCH BRIDGE

In this paper, the computational scheme of the continuous arch bridge is approximately taken as a bar-system with broken-line type.The upper bound of seismic forces on piers of continuous two-hinged arch bridge is evaluated according to the most unfavourable possible deformation state of such a geometrically constraint system under the condition of unknown rigidity distribution of bars.The parametric study for the effects of the number of spans, the geometry of arch, the weight-ratio of the arch to the pier and the height of pier is preliminarily performed and the simple formulas to calculate the seismic forces on piers are proposed.The simple convenient methods to determine the natural frequencies of continuous arch bridges have yet to be studied further.A brief discussion for the continuous fixed-end arch bridge is made in the end of the present paper.
