Investigation for displacement ductility capacity of tall piers

The incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) is used to determine yield, ultimate displacements and the displacement ductility for a tall pier. The main procedures using IDA for determination of yield displacement and ultimate displacement are given. The influence of higher modes on the yield displacement, ultimate displacement and the displacement ductility for a tall pier is investigated. The results show that the contribution of higher vibration modes to response has a significant effect on the yield, ultimate displacement and displacement ductility capacity for a tall pier. The maximum displacement at the top of the pier does not correspond to the maximum curvature at bottom section of the pier for a tall pier due to the effect of higher modes. Use of the conventional static method to (evaluate) the displacement ductility capacity of tall piers will result in a large error.
