Lessons learnt from masonry structural damage in 2008 Wenchuan earthquake

Typical damage to masonry structures in 2008 Wenchuan earthquake were investigated.Based on the analysis of damage characteristics,this paper provide some lessons learnt from the strong earthquake disaster.Seismic principles,key problems,and design suggestions to improve the seismic capacity of masonry structures are proposed.It is concluded that,the corresponding seismic design objectives of masonry structures can be achieved if seismic concepts,structural details,design requirements,and construction quality are firmly held.
