Semi-active control of isolated elevated highway bridge with self-powered MR damper

A new self-powered vibration control system based on magnetorheological(MR) damper is presented to solve the problem of power source of structural control,which consists of four key parts: a current adjustment MR damper,a rack and pinion mechanism,a permanent magnet generator and a control circuit.Based on the widely used two-degree-of-freedom model of isolated elevated highway,the performance indices with displacement control are defined,and the skyhook control that is commonly used in vehicle suspension system design is introduced.Numerical simulations for seismic protection of elevated bridges equipped with this system are conducted.It is shown that both the LQR-clipped and skyhook control with self-powered MR damper can achieve the same performance as its corresponding control with external power supply,and even get close to that of ideal LQR active control.
