Shear mechanism and capacity calculation of abnormal joint panel zone in steel frame

Six specimens in 1/4 scale of the prototype model,which were designed according to the principle of strong-member and weak-connection,were tested under low-cyclic reversed loading to study the seismic performance of abnormal joint.The effect of the section height ratio of beams and the axial compression ratio on the shear capacity of the panel zone was analyzed.The failure mode,hysteretic performance and bearing capacity were obtained.Theoretical analysis and experimental results show that,the top panel zone yields prior to the bottom panel zone,and the specimens fail in 4 failure modes.The bottom panel zone of abnormal joint has restraint on the top panel zone,which makes the shear force that the yielded top panel zone suffers still be increased until the bottom panel zone yields.The calculating formula of shear capacity of normal joint panel zone does not fit for abnormal joint panel zone.Based on the experimental results,the calculating formula of shear capacity of abnormal joint panel zone is derived.
