Shaking tables test on seismic pounding responses of a continuous rigid frame and simply-supported girder combination bridge

In recent years,a large number of long-span bridges suffered great damage due to the pounding during earthquake. Hence,it is important to analyze the effect of pounding on seismic performance of the bridge. A shaking tables test on 1 /10 scaled continuous rigid frame and simply-supported girder constituted bridge is carried out to investigate the bridge pounding response and to develop more accurate simulation models for bridge impact behavior,the damping devices and isolation bearings. The experimental results indicate that the traveling wave effect and the differences in the stiffness and mass of the adjacent bridge decks are the reasons that induce the bridge impact. The isolation bearings reduce the great damage caused by bridge impact. The isolation effect of the lead rubber bearing is not always better than the rubber bearing and it is related to the spectrum characteristics of the ground motions. When the traveling wave effect is considered,the acceleration response obtained a larger peak while the lead rubber bearing is used. Meanwhile,the reduction effect of viscous dampers is closely related to the spectrum characteristics of the ground motions as well.
