RECENT ADVANCES IN RESEARCH ON AND APPLICATIONS OF PASSIVE ENERGY DISSIPATION SYSTEMS

AbstractResearch and development of passive energy dissipation devices for structural applications have had about 25-year history.In recent years,serious efforts have been undertaken to develop the concept of energy dissipation or supplemental damping into a workable technology,and a number of these devices have been installed in structures throughout the world.The main devices developed in the passed years may be grouped into the following six types:viscous,viscoelastic,metallic and frictional,and tuned mass damper(TMD) and tuned liquid damper(TLD).In this paper,the main recent advances in research and applications of above six types of passive energy dissipation systems(PEDSs),including the device configurations,energy dissipation mechanisms,analysis models,analytical and experimental results,design procedures,implementations and design codes,are comprehensively reviewed and some further research directions are pointed out.
