Principle and Test of a Novel Fault Current Limiter Based on IGBT for DC Power System

A novel fault current limiter (FCL) based on IGBT was presented for DC power system in the paper. The structure and principle of the FCL were developed in detail. The FCL was tested with the prospective fault current of 900A, which is supplied with batteries of 300V. The whole limitation time is about 200μs and the FCL acts effectively. The mathematic model of the limitation operation was established and the effects of different parameters were investigated. The limitation characteristics of the DC-side short-circuit of 12-phase synchronous generator-rectifier were analysed with the prospective fault current of 1600A. The test results show that the FCL has many advantages, such as simple structure, fast response and high reliability. Therefore, the device has a broad prospect of application in DC power system.
