Fault Component Distance Relay With Changeable Circle Characteristics

Based on the operating boundary of fault component distance relay, its general operating equation is presented in this paper. To improve its resistive tolerance, a novel type relay with changeable circular characteristics is put forward. And to prevent the relay from "in-phase" problem caused by high fault resistance, its blocking criterion in "in-phase" area is also proposed. The relay is comprised of three operation equations derived from the general operating equation. These equations are grouped under two criteria, where one is calculated by sampling integral arithmetic to achieve its fast operating while the other by Fourier arithmetic to enhance the protected range. Theoretical analysis and dynamic simulation test results show that the fault component distance relay with changeable circle characteristic is security with ultra-high speed and great capability against fault resistance.
