Relationship Between the Electric Field on the Surface of Insulators and Ultra-Violet Pulse Intensity and Its Application in Detecting Faulty Insulators

Simulation regarding potential distribution along an insulator string and electric field distribution in the vicinity of an insulator string is carried out in this paper. Results indicate that when there is a faulty insulator in the string, the electric field distribution and potential distribution change obviously, and electric field increases deeply in some parts, which will intensify corona discharge of insulators. Then a non-contact ultra-violet pulse detecting method is presented to check faulty insulators, based on monitoring the ultra-violet pulse from insulator string in the given time, and a UV-I insulator tester was developed. A series of tests were carried out both in the high voltage hall and on the field. Results show that UV-I insulator tester can detect the defective insulator effectively, for the insulators of 110kV and 220kV voltage rating, when there is a low-resistance insulator in the string, the ultra-violet pulse changes greatly, the relative ratio exceed 10% and 8% respectively , which also indicate it's effective to detect faulty insulators.
