Analysis and Improvement of Zero Sequence Reactance Relay With Applications in Ultra-High-Voltage Long AC Transmission Lines

The performance of ground impedance relay with applications in UHV transmission lines is easy to be disturbed by earth resistance, since the linear relation between measuring impedance and fault distance is replaced by the hyperbolic tangent function. The zero sequence reactance relay (ZSRR) is widely adopted in high-voltage and extra-high-voltage transmission systems due to its good anti-resistance ability and stable protective zone. Hence the ZSRR is evaluated in this paper to verify its performance with applications in UHV lines. And in response to the existed questions, such as the obvious protective zone and relay sensitivity reduction, the possible influence factors are analyzed, and then a novel negative sequence reactance relay is proposed with considering the impact of load current. The simulation results prove its good performance.
