Power Quality Disturbance Data Compression Using JPEG2000

JPEG2000 is the latest international standard for compression of still images.Although the JPEG2000 codec is designed to compress images,this paper illustrates how the JPEG2000 codec can be used to compress 1-dimensional power quality disturbance data.Using the actual power quality disturbance signals the experiments present that the proposed approach outperforms some existing 2-dimensional power quality data compression schemes.The proposed method allows the use of existing hardware and software JPEG2000 codecs for power quality data compression,and can be especially useful in eliminating the need for specialized hardware development.The desirable characteristics of the JPEG2000 codec,such as accurate rate control and progressive transmission,are retained in the presented scheme.
