A Method to Eliminate the Magnetizing Inrush Current of Energized Transformers

When transformers are energized under no-load or lightly loaded condition,the inrush current may occur on the primary circuit of the transformers.The magnetizing inrush current is inevitable when the transformer core enters into saturation state or even deep saturation state due to the many factors such as inception angles,residual flux and so on.The magnetizing inrush current has adverse effect both on the transformer itself and the power quality in the power system.A new technique to remove the inrush currents is proposed when the transformers are switched on.Incorporating the "inrush current suppresser(ICS)",it makes use of the tertiary winding of the three-winding transformer to allow the voltage on the tertiary winding climb gradually,and ensures that the voltages on both sides have the same phase,but different magnitudes.In this case,the inrush current can be eliminated successfully.The simulation results show the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed method.
