A Method to Distinguish Between Fault and Lightning Disturbance on Transmission Lines Based on CVT Secondary Voltage and CT Secondary Current

In the case of lightning striking towers or lines without causing fault, the response of transmission line contains characteristic of lightning current without the characteristic of fault. However, when the fault occurs, there is characteristic of fault current impulse. CVT and CT transfer functions are put forward based on the voltage transfer characteristics and current transfer characteristics. It is found that the oscillation caused by the transfer function of CVT in the simulation includes oscillation caused by poles of transfer function and the numerical oscillation. The CVT secondary voltage and the CT secondary current are used to calculate the instantaneous power, which is selected as the characteristic vector in this paper. The instantaneous power curve clusters formed by different fault types and lightning disturbance are transformed to principle component analysis(PCA) axis via PCA. The bulks of traveling wave data form lightning disturbance cluster center and the fault cluster center. SVM is chosen to determine lightning disturbance from faults. The proposed method is confirmed correct and effective by massive measured field travelling wave data.
