METALLOGENY AND THE NECESSITY OF ENHANCING ITS RESEARCHES IN CHINA

CHEN Guoda (Changsha Institute of Geotectonics, Academia Sinica)
Metallogeny is an applied branch of the earth sciences. It is a frontier science which studies the genesis of mineral deposits, with emphasis on their relationship in space and time to tectonic features of the crust. It is rapidly developed and successfully applied to exploration for mineral. deposits in the world. As early as 1950s, Chinese geologists began to pay attention to such branch of science. They got some achievements on it, and were in the lead in some aspects of metallogeny(for example, in the field of diwa metallogeny—metallogeny of the third tectonic element, and polygenetic compound ore deposits, etc.). But gener-la ly speaking, the metallogeny was not widely studied in China, and the research and application of it lag far behind the requirement for constructing "four modernizations". The paper briefly discasses the definition, contents, task, goal and significance of metallogeny and summarizes the present state of its research and development. The paper tries to offer a few remarks by way of introduction so that others may come up with valuable opinions on metallogeny and enhance its researches in China.
