SEQUENCE STRATIGRAPHY AND SEA LEVEL CHANGES OF ORDOVICIAN IN KURUKTAG, XINJIANG

The Ordovician outcropped in Kuruktag, Xinjiang reveals a sedimentary sequence which shows long-term sea level changes. This sedimentary sequence is composed of 9 Rank III and 3 Rank II sub-sequences, reflecting short term (cycle III and cycle II) sea level changes. The lower Ordovician formed during the transgression characterized by long term sea level change is composed of a set of sub-sequences, i.e., Rank II sub-sequence A developed in bathyal setting. The middle Ordovician formed during the fluctuation characterized by long term sea level change consists of a set of sub-sequences, i.e., Rank II sub-sequence B developed in bathyal-shelf setting. The upper Ordovician formed during the regression characterized by long term sea level change consists of a set of sub-sequences, i.e., Rank II sequence C developed in shallow sea-shore line setting. The characteristics of sequence stratigraphy of Ordovician and related sea level changes are clearly responses to the tectonics during basin formation and transformation. Ordovician is the key period for transformation of the Paleozoic basin in Kuruktag. The rift basin of Cambrian- early Ordovician was transformed into the foreland basin of late Ordovician-Silurian through middle Ordovician. Now, Kuruktag is resulted from the northeast marginal uplift of Tarim basin due to late stage tectonics.
