THREE-DIMENSIONAL STRUCTURE MODELING AND STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF THE LENGHU AREA ON THE NORTHERN MARGIN OF QAIDAM BASIN

Through the interpretation of three-dimensional seismic profiles and by the use of the advanced geologic software, the Cenozoic underground three-dimensional structural model of Lenghu area on the northern margin of the Qaidam Basin is established. By observing and analyzing the three-dimensional structural model it can be discovered that the Cenozoic structure in the Lenghu area is a fault-related anticline resulted from fault F2. Three major faults, i.e., F2, F5 and F6, occur in the Cenozoic in the Lenghu area, and the faults in T2′ surface dextrally cut across the contour, which reflects that the faults are of the dextral strike-slip thrust type and were resulted from a wrenching stress field. The dextral strike-slip thrust faults in the Lenghu area are closely related to the Altun Tagh structural belt, which is a sinistral strike-slip thrust belt developed in the Cenozoic. Via analysis of the regional geologic data and the geometry and kinematics of fault F2, it can be concluded that the fault F2 and its related fold provide excellent channels and structural traps for hydrocarbon migration and accumulation.
