Mechanics of Salt Tectonics in Laizhouwan Sag,Offshore Bohai Bay Basin

The salt tectonics in the onshore Bohai Bay basin have been discussed,yet it had not been discovered in offshore part before 2006. Using the high-resolution 3D seismic and geological date,this paper describes the halokinesis of the salt tectonics and episodic fluid flow in the Laizhouwan sag which is situated in the south part of the offshore Bohai Bay basin. The salt bed structures in the Sha-4 Member of the Paleogene are mainly salt pillows and diaper in the Laizhouwan sag. The shapes of the salt tectonics change regularly along the S-N direction from post-diapir to diapir and pillow. The thickness variations of the suprasalt layers record three growth phases of the salt wall: early diapirism,active diapirism and arching from the Eocene to the Quaternay. The development of the salt tectonics was controlled by multi-factors induced by the dextral strike-slipping movement of the Tan-Lu fault,which formed a retaining bend in the studied area. In the early Oligocene,the salt tectonics were initiated by overpressure formation fractures and gravitational spreading. The dextral strike-slipping movement of the Tan-Lu fault plays an important role in the development of the salt tectonics in the terminal Oligocene. Strike-slipping contraction controls the growth and styles of the salt tectonics after middle Oligocene. Background in the strike-slipping,salt gliding and diapir are main characteristics.
