Study on the Preparation and Swelling Behaviors of Poly (N-isopropylacrylamide)/Clay Nanocomposite Hydrogel

A new kind of poly (N-isopropylacrylamide)/clay nanocomposite hydrogel (PNIPA / Clay) was prepared using inorganic clay as a crosslinker. The morphology, temperature responsive behaviors and deswelling behaviors of the hydrogel were investigated. TEM and SEM images show that the inorganic clay was substantially exfoliated to the nano-dimension platelets which dispersed homogeneously in the hydrogel and acted as multifunctional crosslinkers. The PNIPA/Clay hydrogel exhibited good temperature sensitivity, and an abrupt decrease of swelling ratio can be observed around Volume Phase Transtion Temperature (VPTT). However, the changes of swelling ratio were inclined to decrease with increasing clay contents. The deswelling rate was obviously affected by the crosslinker content in both PNIPA/Clay hydrogels and conventional PNIPA hydrogels though in opposite directions. The lower the clay contents, the higher the deswelling rate of the PNIPA/Clay hydrogels, whereas the deswelling rate of conventional PNIPA hydrogels increased with the increasing content of chemical crosslinker.
