A Preliminary Study on the Distribution of Diatom in Surface Sediments of the Middle South China Sea
Zhan Yufen (Second Institute of Oceanography, State Oceanic Administration)
A total of 129 species of diatoms have" been found in 80 surface sediment samples from the middle South China Sea. Diatom glora in surface sediments in the area can be divided into 3 assemblages: 1) Coscinodiscus nodulifer - Cos. radiatus - Melosira sulcata - Cyclotella striata assemblage, 2) Coscinodiscus nodulifer - Hemidiscus cuneiformis - Thalassionema nitzschioides - Nitzschia marina assemblage, and 3) Coscinodiscus nodulifer - Hemidiscus cuneiformis - Nitzschia marina assemblage. Absolute abundance of diatoms and controlling factors are analysed. According to Rhizosolena bergonii Peragalla and fresh water diatom distribution, influence of the Kuroshio and land runoff on the area are discussed.
