A preliminary study on surface microstructure of quartz sand from Zhejiang coast zone

By analyzing the electron microphotographes of quartz sand from the Zhejiang coast zone, it is known that the rounded degree and microstructure of the quartz sand is distinct in different sedimentary environments. The roundness of river quartz sand is the worst, which may be related to the closer source. The rounded degree of quartz sand in shallow waters is worse than that in the tidal zone, which is associated with hydrodynamic effect during long period. There are seven kinds of microstructure of quartz sand in this area: (1) Conchoidal fractures, (2) Solution holes, (3) Irregular fractures, (4) V-shaped marks, (5) Plate-marks, (6) Surface curved grooves, and (7) Siliceous coating. Of them conchoidal fractures, solution holes, irregular fractures and siliceous coating are more prominent in the Zhejiang coast zone. Finally, the importance of studying quartz microstructure is indicated.
