Study on the relationship between catch of mackerel and environmental factors in the East China Sea in summer

Mackerel is one of the most important economic marine fish species and the target species of the light purse seine fishery in China. Study of the relationship between the mackerel fishing ground and the marine environmental factors is the basis of the fishing condition forecast for the light purse seine fishery. Based on the catch data of the Chinese light purse-seine fishery and remote sensing data from July to September during the period of 2002~2004,the relationships between the distribution of mackerel fishing ground and sea surface temperature (SST),concentration of chlorophyll a (Chl-a) and sea surface height (SSH) in the East China Sea were analyzed. The frequency distribution of the monthly catch on the SST and Chl-a was statistically studied to confirm the optimal SST and Chl-a for the central fishing ground of the mackerel light purse seine fishery,and then the relation between the distribution of the fishing ground and the SSH field was analyzed by overlapping the weekly catch and SHH using GIS software. The results shows that the catch of light purse seine fishery is in direct proportion with SST but not with the concentration of Chl-a,which shows that Chl-a is not the most important factor that affects the formation of the fishing ground. The distribution trend of SST/Chl-a of the fishing ground in different years basically showed no difference in summer,and the catch was mainly distributed in southern East China Sea with low Chl-a and high SST and in the northern East China Sea with low SST but high Chl-a. In July and August,the central fishing grounds were in the southern part of the East China Sea with the most favorable SST of 27~29 ℃ and 28~30 ℃ respectively and the most favorable concentration of Chl-a from 0.10 mg/m3 to 0.30 mg/m3. But in September the fishing grounds distribute either in the northern or in the southern parts of the East China Sea. The most favorable SST was 27~28 ℃ in the southern part and 26~27 ℃ in the northern part,while the most favorable concentration of Chl-a was also from 0.10 mg/m3 to 0.30 mg/m3 in the south but from 1.00 mg/m3 to 3.00 mg/m3 in the north. The central fishing ground were usually located in the transition area where the maximum and minimum SSH and the warm and cold water meets,at the side of maximum SST,i.e. at the side of warm water mass. SST,Chl-a and SSH has their individual advantage in forecasting potential fishing zone,but it is more reliable to combine these 3 factors when doing so.
