Alkenones and fossil

C37 -C39 long chain unsaturated ketones (alkenones)were indentified of a core sample from the South China Sea. The carbon number distribution indicates that these compounds are derived from the Pyrmnesiophyte alga Emiliania huxleyi, which is the predominant coccolithophorid in these samples.Fluctuations in the unsaturated value of carbon 37 alkenone(U37k)show correlations with the glacial/interglacial cycles record in 618O values for planktonic foraminifera.The paleotemperature of Sea water estimated from U37k is lower than the actual annual average temperature of sea water.
