Joint microstructure and properties of ZL114A by friction stir welding

This paper studied the friction stir welding(FSW) for ZL114A cast aluminium alloy.The results showed that defect free weld was produced by FSW.Comparing with the coarse dendrite microstucture of base metal,the eutectic Si particles are homogeneously dispersed in nugget zone without visual defects.Hardness distribution of nugget zone is well-distributed and less fluctuation.The result of tensile properties shows that many joints fractured at Heat-affected Zone(HAZ),the transverse tensile strength of FSW ZL114A joint reached about 70% of that of the base metal.
