ROCK DILATANCY AND MECHANISM OF EARTHQUAKE PRECURSORS(1)——THE POSSIBILITY OF ROCK DILATANCY IN THE CRUST

After the dilatancy-difussion model suggested, being the general origin for many precursors of earthquakes, rock dilatancy has been widely viewed as a very interesting subject by researchers. However, further practice and theoretical studies in the aspects of prediction of earthquakes and rock dilatancy since then have raised many new questions could be neither regarded as good enough evidences to deny the possibility of rock dilataney in the crust, nor demonstrated to show that the rock dilatancy is meaningless for the mechanism of seismic precursors. The presence of rock dilatancy in rock experiments is confirmative, and also there are some evidences for its existence in nature. The problems that remain unsolved are the following: if there are conditions for rock dilatancy in the crust? how the rock dilatancy is related to the seismic precursors? These problems are not clarified so far, and just the subjects for our research. The former one is discussed in this paper.Based on the available results of rock mechanical experiments and geophysics, whether there exist conditions for rock dilatancy in the crust is discussed. The authors draw conclusion that the presence of rock dilatancy in the crust is possible under some conditions.
