SHORT-TERM AND IMPENDING ANOMALY INDEX OF THE EARTH RESISTIVITY OF M 6 EARTHQUAKES IN NORTH CHINA

This paper has obtained the short-term and impending anomaly indexes for monitoring and predicting the earth resistivity of moderately strong earthquakes with M = 6 in North China, according to studies of earthquake cases with short-term and impending anomalies appearing around epicenters before the occurrence of earthquakes with M~6 (with the exception of the M6 strong aftershocks in Tangshan seismic region) in North China since 1976. The main indexes are: 1. The short-term and impending anomaly range of the earth resistivity at most stations are located within the diameter of 100 km from the epicenter and some stations 300 km away from the epicenter also exhibted obvious short-term and impending anomalies for some shocks. On the contrary, some stations near the epicenter did not record anomaly. Generally, the shorter the distance to the epicenter, the bigger the possibility of the impending anomaly of accelerating changes is; 2. Anomalous period: the short-term anomaly time is 2-6 months, and the impending anomalous time is about 20 days; 3. The relative amplitude of the occurrence of short-term and impending anomalies for most stations is more than 1% and for few stations is less than 1%; 4. The property of short-term and impending anomalies for most stations is negative decline anomaly, and there is positive rising anomaly at several stations. Additionally, the paper also discussed the generality and diversity of the short-term and impending anomaly state, with are probably related to the principal strees of different directions acted on the rock-soil layer beneath the stations on the basis of the pressure experiment results of the rock-soil layer under natural state.
