THE EFFECT OF LUNAR PHASE ON SEISMICITY

Ding Jianhai Huang Xuexiang Dai Shuling(Center for Analysis and Prediction, SSB)  
Based on a large amount of earthquake records with magnitude M6.0 occurred in the mainland of China since 1910 and events M 1.0 in the Capital area since 1966, the authors studied the effect of lunar phase associated with seismicity. The results show that the earthquake sequence at each lunar phase was obviously affected and modulated by the lunar phase, indicating a certain regularity. More than 25 percent of the average frequency of seismicity may be affected by the maximum amplitude of lunar phase, proved the existence of the lunar phase effect of seismic activity. This influence can't be neglected. The results also show that the basic feature of the lunar phase effect is the periodity of half month and one month. Besides, one fourth month period seems to be remarkable for the aftershock sequences of Tangshan and Xingtai earthquake. The frequency and strength of seismic activity will reach the relative limitation around the new moon, full moon, first and last quarters.
