THE CHARACTERISTICS OF RUPTURE PROCESS OF XINJIANG ARTUSHI EARTHQUAKE (M_s=6.9), 19, MARCH 1996

The earthquake rupture process of Artushi earthquake with Ms =6.9 is analysed onthe study of aftershock distribution. Combining the tectonic movement, stress field char-acteristics with distribution of the three earthquakes in this area (Msabout 6) from 1972,the author studied the direction of earthquake rupture and earthquake migration alongfault zone and nearby. The result demonstrates that the rupture is an obvious one-siderupture. Distributions of aftershocks, both in Artushi and Keping seismic areas, show acertain regularity, and earthquake ruptures are mainly one-side. Faults are dip-slip re-versed ones with the NS-direction compressional stress. Ruptures in different areas are ofobvious regional characteristics. The distribution direction of strong aftershocks shows thestress concentration and it indicates the migration of the recent strong earthquakes alongthe same fault and nearby, especially along Keping fault.
