Numerical simulation on propagation, interaction and coalescence of multi-cracks in rocks

The propagation, interaction and coalescence of multi cracks in rocks were numerically studied by using a newly developed numerical code, Rock Failure Process Analysis (RFPA 2D ). By demonstrating the deformation and stress field, the heterogeneity related acoustic emissions and the rock bridge behavior, the simulation revealed mechanism of propagation, interaction and coalescence of multi cracks in brittle and heterogeneous rock. It is shown that, for rock materials which are highly heterogeneous, to treat it as a homogeneous and continuous material may result in a different simulation result from that for the real rock behavior, such as acoustic emission or microseism and rock bridge or en echelon faults.
